Created in God's Image: Creating is a Worthy Pursuit
As an artist who has spent years navigating the highs and lows of a regular art practice and running a creative business, I often encounter people who long to create but feel held back—by fear, doubt, or a lingering sense that their efforts might not be "worth it."
I'll be the first to admit, that for many years I saw my art practice equivalent to sitting on the couch eating bonbons-a guilty pleasure. I loved it so much and felt shame for spending time painting when there were more "important and necessary" things to do. But then a shift happened. I discovered that the Bible says I'm created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and He is the ultimate Creator. In fact, He commands us to co-create with him so we display His image by adding beauty to a dark world.
To anyone who finds themselves in that place, I want to remind you of a beautiful truth: You are created to create.
We are made in the image of God, the ultimate Creator...think about that for a moment. The same God who painted the skies, sculpted mountains, and orchestrated the rhythm of the seas also placed within us a spark of His creativity. When you create—whether it’s a painting, a poem, a song, or even a doodle on a scrap of paper—you are reflecting His image.
Creating isn’t about perfection. It’s not about producing something that will hang in a gallery or go viral online. It’s about engaging with the gift of creativity that God has given you. It’s about expressing who you are and exploring the world in a way that brings joy, healing, and connection.
For years, I wrestled with the idea that my art needed to have a purpose beyond the act of creating itself. Was it good enough? Did it matter? But the more I leaned into my faith, the more I realized that the act of creating is a form of worship, and now I try to view my personal art time that way. It’s a way to honor the Creator by using the gifts He has entrusted to me. It's a worthy pursuit and a tool I've been gifted to connect with others, share His truth and quiet my spirit.
If you’re a beginning or non-practicing artist, let go of the idea that you need permission from anyone to start. You already have it—from the One who made you. Your creativity matters, not because of how it’s received, but because of the joy and fulfillment it can bring to your life and the lives of those around you.
So pick up that pencil, brush, or instrument. Scribble, sketch, sing, or dance. Allow yourself to create freely and wholeheartedly, knowing that in doing so, you are stepping into the calling of being made in God’s image. You are created to create, and that alone makes it a worthwhile pursuit.
I'm running a special Art + Worship online course bundle right now. These courses share some of my art practices and how I now use my creative practice worship Him and meditate on His word, and create art I can share with others. You can learn more about them HERE.
