Mixed media artist Stacy Spangler introduces Threads of Freedom — a new original collection of hand-painted, woven flag art created in honor of America’s 250th birthday, honoring sacrifice, resilience, and the beauty of many stories woven into one. Each design in this 16 piece collection is unique, hand painted and original.
As I’ve been creating my new Threads of Freedom 250 collection, I’ve found myself revisiting some of my favorite Fourth of July memories growing up in Fayetteville. Long days spent at the country club pool, relay races and cannonballs, running barefoot with friends, eating too much concession stand food, staying until we were sunburned, thirsty, and completely exhausted. As the day faded into evening, families spread blankets across the golf course, lawn chairs appeared in every direction, and everyone waited together for the fireworks to light up the Arkansas sky.Those memories feel simple now, but they remind me of something I cherish deeply—community, tradition, freedom, and the joy of gathering together and the ones who have sacrificed it all to assure we enjoy these freedoms.
The process: These pieces are truly a labor of love. The process is time intensive, filled with layers, texture, drying time, deconstruction, weaving, mounting, and framing. Each finished work is thoughtfully framed, allowing the woven texture and dimensional details to become part of the experience of the piece itself.
