Finding Your Voice: How to Develop Your Own Artistic Style as a Beginner Painter
When I first started painting, I picked oil paints as my medium of choice because I was captivated by the rich color and texture. But like many beginner artists, I found myself trying to mimic others or paint just like a photo, unsure of what my style actually looked like, so I got frustrated and actually gave up painting for awhile. If you’re in that place right now—exploring, experimenting, and maybe a little frustrated—know that you’re exactly where you need to be-so don't give up! Developing your own artistic style isn’t a destination; it’s a journey.
Here are a few tips that helped me along the way:
1. Give Yourself Permission to Play
Don’t worry about “getting it right.” Try different techniques, materials, and subject matter. Let curiosity lead the way. When you’re not tied to perfection, your creative instincts can start to shine through—and that’s where your unique voice begins to surface.
2. Take Note of What You’re Drawn To
Keep a journal or folder of what inspires you—colors, patterns, themes, or even emotions. Over time, you’ll notice patterns that reflect you. Your style often lives in what you’re consistently attracted to. Get access to my FREE Inspiration Look Book course HERE.
3. Create Consistently
It’s tempting to wait until inspiration hits, but the real magic happens in the doing. The more you create, the more your natural tendencies emerge—your brushstrokes, your color palette, your way of interpreting the world.
4. Learn from Others, But Don’t Copy
Study other artists whose work resonates with you, but use their influence as a springboard, not a blueprint. Ask yourself what you like about their work—is it their use of light, the looseness, the layering? Then, explore how those elements might show up in your own way.
5. Trust the Process
Your style will evolve. That’s a good thing! Every painting teaches you something, even the ones you’d rather toss in the trash. Be patient and kind to yourself—it’s all part of becoming the artist you were created to be.
I believe that each of us was uniquely created, and our art is a reflection of that divine design-read more HERE. Your artistic style is already inside you—you just need to keep showing up at the canvas and let it unfold. Happy painting!
